Full Description
The mountain ridge of one hundred kilometers separates Messinia from Sparta. Large gorges and canyons present a succession of habitats with various ecosystems and flora with countless endemic plants. The summit, a solid limestone forms an almost perfect pyramid and it is considered as a sacred place from ancient times. Ascending to the summit was very important in ancient times and still is today.
Our route begins from the mountaineering refuge to ‘’Prophet Elias’’, the highest peak of the mountain and of the whole Peloponnese. We penetrate into the mountain by maneuvering between rocks until we reach alpine meadows where the undergrowth of herbs and wildflowers are dominant with most important the endemic mountain tea. As we ascend we take furtive glances behind while we gain more height and we enjoy the spectacular view that the mountain generously offers.
We continue until the point ”portes”, a split of the ridge that marks our entry into the final part of our journey, the summit. We leave behind ‘’portes’’ walking the so called ‘’immortal ridge’’ a few steps more and we touch the summit plateau conquering the highest point of the mountain. The view from the top is breathtaking since our gaze is fades away to all corners of the horizon. After a healthy picnic that will get our batteries charged we take the road back.
