Holy Mary Tripiti Monastery

Holy Mary Tripiti Monastery

Built in a rock on the site of an old monastery, over the town port, Holy Mary Tripiti is the protector of Aegio. According to tradition, in 1550 A.D., a castaway, in his attempt to find land, saw a light coming from the rock. As he came close he found the icon of Our Lady hidden in a hole (‘trypa’ in Greek). For that reason the church was later named Our Lady Tripiti. The hagiographer remains unknown, while the castaway became the first monk to inhabit the monastery. The church took its actual form in the 19th century.

Thousands of pilgrims come from all over Greece on the church’s feast day, every year on Easter Friday. It is considered a Greek Holy Pilgrimage.
